Amputee Clinic
HealthSouth Harmarville offers a weekly amputee clinic providing the expertise of
clinicians who work with patients who have suffered an amputation. The team includes
a physiatrist, prosthetist, physical therapist and vocational counselor. Pre and
post prosthetic care is provided to all amputee patients.
Amputee
Life after amputation is filled with the challenge of adapting and returning to
a normal life. The goal of HealthSouth's amputee program is to return the patient
to the highest level of independence and functional lifestyle at home, in the community
and in the workplace.
Arthritis
For many people the pain of osteoarthritis can become so severe that it disrupts
normal living. Caring for yourself becomes difficult, and handling family or work
responsibilities may become impossible. HealthSouth's arthritis rehabilitation program
helps an individual reduce and manage their pain while increasing their independence.
Brain Injury
Early rehabilitation is critical to help patients achieve their fullest potential
after brain injury. HealthSouth has established a rehabilitation program that helps
patients achieve and maximize functional and cognitive recovery following a brain
injury. The program enables patients to become more self-sufficient and understand
how to avoid future health problems.
Burns
HealthSouth is equipped to provide a full range medical rehabilitation services
required by individuals whose lives have been altered by severe burns. Through a
team-treatment approach to patient care, our physician specialists, therapists,
and support staff help patients maximize functional independence and manage the
complex medical conditions and psychological challenges associated with serious
burns. In addition to providing a full complement of physical rehabilitation services,
HealthSouth provides treatment for the medical and therapeutic needs specific to
burn patients.
Cardiac
Rebuilding your life after a traumatic heart attack or bypass surgery can be a challenge.
At HealthSouth, we understand that restored strength and hope are vital parts of
recovery. Our cardiac care program is designed to reduce the risk of future heart
problems by helping patients understand heart disease and develop a healthy lifestyle.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)Program
This FDA approved intervention is for the cardinal symptoms of Parkinson's disease
and Dystonia including tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. HealthSouth in concert
with local leading neuro-surgeons and neurologists provides comprehensive programming
and rehabilitation for patients following DBS surgery.
Diagnostic Services
HealthSouth Harmarville provides general radiology and fluoroscopic exams in addition
to CT scans without contrast. Urodymanic studies and phlebotomy/lab services are
also provided. All Ultrasound studies are completed with the exception of OB studies.
Dialysis
HealthSouth Harmarville provides on-site dialysis on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
following the patient’s therapy program so as not to interfere. Some insurance companies
require patients to receive dialysis off-site, however, Harmarville assists in scheduling
the transportation for these patients to get to and from their appointment.
General Rehabilitation
HealthSouth’s General Rehabilitation Program provides comprehensive medical rehabilitation
services for individuals who have experienced a decline in their physical and cognitive
abilities. This decline may be due to an illness or other medical condition. Our
General Rehabilitation Program is designed to help patients maximize functional
independence; maximize emotional well-being; and resume their previous roles or
modified roles at work, home or leisure.
Hand Therapy
This treatment of the hand and/or upper extremity is offered by extensively trained
therapists specializing in this area. A comprehensive evaluation of the hand and
upper extremity is completed to determine the most appropriate interventions. Conditions
treated include arthritis and rheumatic diseases, hand injuries, industrial accidents/work
injuries, lymphedema, orthopedic conditions, stroke, spinal cord and other neurological
disorders. Treatment programs include custom static and dynamic splinting; fracture,
sprain, and tendonitis programs to manage pain and/or recover range of motion and
strength; post-surgical and post-trauma intervention; management of the neurological
hand / upper extremity to maximize functional use; rehabilitation technologies including
Saebo Flex, Reo, Bioness, and Interactive Metronome.
Hip Fracture
Rehabilitation following an orthopedic surgery is a very challenging and demanding
experience. The rehabilitation program for hip fracture or other orthopedic surgery
was established to assist our patients in setting and achieving their goals to maximize
functional recovery and independence
ITB Program
Intrathecal Baclofen (ITB) therapy is an effective FDA-approved treatment for severe
spasticity, a frequent complication of stroke, MS, brain injury, spinal cord injury,
cerebral palsy or other neurological conditions that result in increased muscle
tone. Patients receiving ITB therapy receive direct infusion of baclofen via a programmable
pump. To be considered for this therapy, a patient must be evaluated by a physician
to determine if he/she is appropriate.
Joint Replacement
Rehabilitation following an orthopedic surgery is a very challenging and demanding
experience. The rehabilitation program for joint replacement surgery was established
to assist our patients in setting and achieving their goals to maximize functional
recovery and independence.
Lymphedema Program
HealthSouth offers the latest techniques available in complex decongestive physiotherapy
to treat lymphedema. Patients are evaluated by a certified lymphedema therapist
who tests the presence and cause of the edematous limb(s) and assesses treatment
options. Individualized treatment programs may include: manual lymph drainage, massage,
and/or gradient sequential pump therapy, custom bandaging, recommendations for exercise
and self care, family education, and procurement of needed day and/or night garments.
Multiple Sclerosis
The Multiple Sclerosis Program is a multidisciplinary treatment approach designed
to maximize an individual's independence. A specialized team of therapists is committed
to improving the quality of life for those with multiple sclerosis and their families.
The program addresses the individual's physical, emotional and training needs to
result in positive outcomes in all stages of the disease.
Multiple Trauma
HealthSouth is committed to providing every opportunity for optimal recovery of
the traumatically injured patient. Our teams provide extensive and comprehensive
rehabilitation programs, keeping pace with a wide range of traumatic conditions
including closed head, spinal cord and multi-trauma/multi-system injuries. Each
program offers a team approach to establishing an individualized plan of care based
on the specific deficits experienced by the patient.
Neurorehabilitation
HealthSouth's Neurological Disorders Program meets the needs of patients with chronic
progressive conditions such as Parkinson's disease, or acute remitting diseases
such as Multiple Sclerosis. By following a rehabilitation plan designed to achieve
functional gains, patients become more functionally independent and learn how to
reduce the risk of future medical problems.
Orthopedics
Orthopedic rehabilitation treats musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. HealthSouth's
pathway to recovery for patients with orthopedic conditions helps them achieve and
maintain functional gains in a timely, cost-effective manner. The program is individualized
according to a patient's needs, functional goals and extent of injury.
Pain Management
A Pain Management physician is available at HealthSouth Harmarville on a weekly
basis. Steroid injections are provided after evaluation for medical necessity by
this physician.
Parkinson's Disease
HealthSouth coordinates a specialized program that meets the needs of patients with
chronic progressive conditions such as Parkinson's disease. By following a rehabilitation
regimen to achieve functional gains, patients become more functionally independent
and learn how to reduce the risk of future medical problems.
Pre-Driving Evaluations and On-Road Driving Program
HealthSouth Harmarville offers pre-driving evaluations to provide patients and his/her
doctor information regarding the basic skills needed to resume driving. This service
is offered on an inpatient and outpatient basis and is founded on current research.
An on-road evaluation is also available through referral to Brandt’s Driving School.
The on-road evaluation is on-site and coordinated through the Outpatient Department
at Harmarville.
Psychology Services
HealthSouth Harmarville offers a variety of Psychology Services for both inpatients
and outpatients. Neurobehavior and Behavior Management Services are available as
deemed appropriate by the attending or referring physician. Psychologists who have
experience and training in rehabilitation provide evaluation and treatment for inpatients
and outpatients. Neuropsychological evaluations are also available when ordered
by the attending or referring physician.
Spasticity Management
For patients who have suffered stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or a spinal
cord injury, spasticity can be disabling. But it doesn't have to be. Through HealthSouth's
comprehensive, outcome-focused rehabilitation program, patients can achieve maximum
functional independence.
Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord rehabilitation is an intricate and complicated process that requires
a team of experts to enhance a patient's abilities on physical, cognitive and emotional
levels. Based on a patient's limitations, our interdisciplinary team establishes
an individualized treatment plan. Each plan of care incorporates specific methods
that encourage the patient to develop pragmatic problem-solving approaches appropriate
for his or her rehabilitation and continuing care.
Stroke
After many years of helping individuals recover from stroke, HealthSouth has established
a stroke rehabilitation program to help patients achieve functional gains in a timely,
cost-effective manner. This pathway to recovery allows patients to become more functionally
independent and understand how to incorporate lifestyle changes that reduce the
risk of future strokes or other complications.

Therapeutic Aquatics Program
HealthSouth Harmarville’s on-site pool offers Aquatic therapy on an in-patient and
out-patient basis. The full size pool offers an AquaTrend work station, cross-country
ski machine, hand rails, parallel bars, ramp with rails, and clinicians trained
in aquatic therapy. Benefits include: increased muscle strength, improved flexibility,
range of motion and endurance, reduced joint and muscle stress, decreased pain and
increased relaxation and circulation.
Transitional Care Unit
The TCU at HealthSouth Harmarville is designed to meet the needs of individuals
who do not have the endurance or have weight-bearing limitations which prohibit
full participation at the required level of intensity for acute rehabilitation.
This program prepares individuals for transition into acute rehabilitation at the
appropriate pace and works toward increasing independence. Individuals receive a
structured program tailored to their needs. Directed by a physiatrist, the treatment
plan includes the required therapies and nursing skills to address current needs
and abilities. This program provides the required stepping stones within the continuum
to prepare for a successful acute rehabilitation experience.
Wheelchair Evaluation Program
Patients requiring wheelchair mobility or seating evaluations may make an appointment
at HealthSouth Harmarville’s wheelchair clinic with a prescription from a physician.
The patient’s chosen vendor will be present. Special consideration is given to skin
integrity via mapping.
Wound Care
HealthSouth Harmarville has a full time Ostomy Nurse, certified in wound continence
care. The Ostomy nurse and therapy staff participate in wound rounds on a weekly
basis. During these formal rounds, progress is monitored and individualized treatment
protocols are formulated and recommended to the attending physician. Through this
multidisciplinary approach, all aspects of wound management are addressed and in
