Ken Anthony
Chief Executive Officer
Ken brings more than 24 years of health care management experience to HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital. Ken’s management experience has spanned acute inpatient rehabilitation up to and including acute tertiary care/trauma hospital operations. Ken has held a number of progressively responsible management positions including program director, vice president and chief operating officer. Ken is actively engaged in a number of professional organizations, community initiatives and government relations activities which positively impact the delivery of rehabilitation services to patients and families. Ken frequently speaks to the benefits of rehabilitation services, has contributed to articles which have been published and is often recognized for his expertise and commitment to improving the lives of patients who receive rehabilitation care.

Thomas Franz
Medical Director
Dr. Franz is a specialist in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with a focus on brain injury rehabilitation. A graduate of Indiana University Medical School, Dr. Franz completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and has been a member of the medical staff at HealthSouth Harmarville since 1989. Dr. Franz is a member of the Choice Care Physicians group practice. 

Sam Young
Director of Nursing
Sam has 38 years of progressive experience in healthcare management.  Currently, as the Chief Nursing Officer at HealthSouth Harmarville, Sam also serves as the Regional Chief Nursing Officer for the HealthSouth Northeast Region, which includes eight inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and one long-term acute care hospital.  A twelve year HealthSouth veteran, Sam received his degree in nursing and a bachelor’s degree in Health Service Administration.  Sam’s master’s degree is from Carnegie Mellon University in Public Management with a focus on health system and business. His career experiences have afforded him ample experience in designing, opening and operating units and departments within the Acute Care and Long Term Care settings.  His background ranges from medical surgical, rehabilitation, maternal child health, critical care and surgical suites. Carlow University chose to recognize his contribution as a nursing community leader in the Pittsburgh area by inducting him into Sigma Theta Tau, ETA Epsilon.  He is also a member of American Organization of Nurse Executives, Southwestern Pennsylvania organization of Nurse Executives and Association of Rehabilitation Nursing

Mark Van Volkenburg
Director of Therapy Operations
Mark oversees the hospital’s daily therapy operations, including physical, occupational, speech and hand therapies, psychology, therapeutic recreation and assistive technology. He joined HealthSouth Harmarville in 1994 and has served in various roles, including director of physical therapy and regional director of clinical services. Mark received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Slippery Rock University and a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from the University of Pittsburgh.  Mark is a member of the Three Rivers Academic Consortium, the Pittsburgh Area Physical Therapy Director’s Forum, and is a guest lecturer at several schools of physical therapy in Southwestern, Pennsylvania. He has also held the position of delegate to the APTA House of Delegates and vice-chair of the Southwest District of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association.

Bruce R. Kelly, MD
Spinal Cord and Multiple Sclerosis Program Director
Bruce R. Kelly, MD, is director of the Spinal Cord and Multiple Sclerosis Programs at HealthSouth Harmarville. He is also a family practice physician with a focus on spinal cord injury and diseases. Dr. Kelly has extensive experience in the management of spasticity, Baclofen pump management and wound care. He has completed research in paraplegic rehabilitation and intrathecal administration of Baclofen to treat spasticity. Dr. Kelly has presented educational sessions regarding management of medical problems in spinal cord injured patients and spasticity management. A graduate of Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of Penn State University, Dr. Kelly completed his residency in family practice at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Kelly is a member of multiple professional societies and is a diplomate of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Catherine M. Birk, MD

Catherine M. Birk, MD, is a specialist in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation with a focus on stroke, Parkinson’s disease and spasticity management. Dr. Birk is one of the few physicians in the area who program the Deep Brain Stimulator for control of Parkinson’s disease. She has been a member of the medical staff at HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital since 1987 and a member of ChoiceCare Physicians group practice since 1990. Dr. Birk has presented educational and promotional information for the Stroke Program on behalf of HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital and ChoiceCare Physicians.

Dr. Birk is on staff at various area hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. She has been on courtesy staff of the West Penn Allegheny Health System since 2001 and active staff at the Suburban Campus and the Alle-Kiski Medical Center since 2000. Dr. Birk is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and completed her residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She is on the board of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, Pittsburgh Area Chapter and member of multiple professional societies. Dr. Birk is board certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.


Charles C. Greim , MD
Staff Physiatrist

Charles C. Greim, MD, is a specialist in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation with a focus on brain injury rehabilitation. He is currently a staff physiatrist, and former director of head injury services at HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital. He is also former director of the rehabilitation unit at (AGH) Allegheny General Hospital - Suburban Campus.

A graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Greim completed his residency in internal medicine at MSU-Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies and physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at University of Michigan Hospitals. Dr. Greim has been a member of the ChoiceCare Physicians group practice since 1990 and has been on staff at HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital since 1987. Dr. Greim has been on courtesy staff of the West Penn Allegheny Health System since 1994 and active staff at the Suburban Campus since 1998. He is also on staff at various area hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Dr. Greim is a member of multiple professional societies and is a diplomate of both the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.


Laura M. Shymansky, MD Laura M. Shymansky, MD
A member of HealthSouth medical staff since 1990, Dr. Shymansky graduated from the College of William and Mary and earned her medical degree from the University of Virginia of Medicine. She served her internships in internal medicine at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Salem Veteran’s Hospital, and her residencies in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Medical College of Virginia and Case Western Reserve University-MetroHealth Medical Center. Her current clinical interests include spinal cord injuries, electromyography and musculoskeletal disorders. She is board certified in physical medicine and Rehabilitation and spinal cord injury medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Spinal Injury Association, American Paraplegia Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Allegheny County Medical Society.



James Kreshon, Jr., DO
Medical Director, Skilled Nursing Unit and Home Health
James Kreshon, DO, is a specialist in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation with a focus on orthopedic, geriatric and amputee rehabilitation. Medical director for the skilled nursing unit and home health of HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Kreshon is the former medical director for the rehabilitation unit at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital. Dr. Kreshon currently serves on the executive board as the vice president for ChoiceCare Physicians. He has been a member of the medical staff at HealthSouth Harmarville Rehabilitation Hospital and a member of ChoiceCare Physicians group practice since 2001. Dr. Kreshon has been on active staff at the West Penn Allegheny Health System, Suburban Campus since 2001. He is also on staff at various area hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Dr. Kreshon completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is a member of multiple professional societies and is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
